The European Union agreed on Tuesday to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria.
Sources confirmed that ambassadors from the 27 EU member states reached a preliminary agreement on the matter, and it is expected to be officially announced by foreign ministers later Tuesday.
In a statement ahead of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas expressed hope that the ministers would reach an agreement to lift economic sanctions on Syria.
She added that the goal is to ensure job opportunities and decent livelihoods for the Syrian people, contributing to the country’s stability.
It’s worth noting that on February 24, the European Union decided to suspend some previously imposed sanctions on Syria, particularly those related to the banking, energy, and transportation sectors.
This decision coincides with US President Donald Trump’s announcement last week that all US sanctions on Syria would be lifted.
