The Electoral College confirms Biden’s victory in the US presidency after exceeding the required quorum by the votes of the state of California and the closure of the Congress building and the legislative buildings in the state of Michigan due to receiving threats
The US electoral college voted Monday in favor of confirming the victory of the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, to be the next president of the United States, at a time when President Donald Trump continues to question the election result.
Voting took place throughout the United States, with electors generally meeting in state capitals.
Biden’s victory was confirmed after members of the California Electoral College gave him their 55 votes, thus obtaining more than 270 votes, needed to win the presidency.
Biden won 306 votes in the electoral college, compared to 232 votes for Trump.
And all states have approved their results for the November 3 elections.
The electoral college system distributes 538 votes to states based on population size.
The winner of the presidential election is the candidate who gets more than 270 electoral votes.
On the other hand, the congressional building and legislative buildings in the state of Michigan were closed due to receiving threats.
“The Democratic electorate in Michigan must be able to move forward in the fulfillment of their duty, free from threats of violence and intimidation,” said Republican Majority Leader in the Michigan State Senate, Mike Sherky, in a statement. “Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris won the election, in Michigan”.
The electoral college votes for each state have taken on great significance due to Trump’s allegation of widespread fraud without any basis.
November election results show that Democrat Biden, who previously held the position of US vice president, won 306 votes in the electoral college, surpassing the 270-vote barrier needed to win the US presidential seat. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are due to start their terms on January 20.
Biden’s transition team said in a statement that the president-elect will deliver a speech at 8:00 pm EST today (0100 GMT on Tuesday) about the electoral college and “the strength and resilience of our democracy”.
Electors in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin voted in favor of Biden on Monday, confirming his victory in crucial states, and Trump tried to challenge its results to court, to no avail.
Once the electoral college vote is complete, Trump’s only remaining gambit will be to convince Congress not to ratify the result on January 6.
