The Brazilian president permanently dismisses his country’s ambassador to Israel from his post and doesn’t think of appointing a replacement for him
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dismissed his ambassador to Israel from his post and sent him to be his special representative in Geneva amid a diplomatic row between the two countries.
Frederico Mayer’s dismissal comes just months after Lula summoned him to return to Brazil.
Meyer’s summons came after Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz summoned Mayer to tell him that Lula was persona non grata in Israel.
The Israeli move is related to Lula’s remarks in which he likened Israel’s war on Gaza to the Holocaust.
President has accused Israel of committing a genocide in Gaza, likening the war between Israel and Hamas to the Holocaust during World War II.
Brazil subsequently recalled its ambassador for consultations, as did the Israeli ambassador in Brasilia.
The diplomatic source said Wednesday that the humiliation inflicted on Mayer was behind his final summons.
