A new mystery has emerged in the case of missing scientists, following a request from US authorities.

A tourist stumbled upon the remains of scientist Melissa Casillas last month, who had been missing since June 2025.

Casillas, a specialist in nuclear research, is part of a series of mysterious disappearances involving 11 scientists over the past three years.

The remains were found in the Carson National Forest, as the New Mexico State Police said in an official statement that on May 28, a tourist informed authority that he had found human remains inside the Carson National Forest.

The statement added: “It has been definitively identified that the remains belong to the missing Melissa Casillas”.

The relevant authorities have not yet determined the nature or cause of death, pending the completion of investigations.

Details of Casillas’s disappearance and her work in nuclear research: Casillas had suddenly disappeared from her job, and she didn’t return home after visiting her daughter at her workplace, according to the police who began searching for her immediately after receiving the report.

The deceased scientist worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a vital center for nuclear research in the United States.

Another missing scientist, Anthony Chavez, also worked at the same laboratory.

According to US media, at least 11 people have died or gone missing since 2022.

Reports indicate that the vast majority of them worked in sensitive fields, such as Nuclear physics, Space research, and Studies of unexplained atmospheric phenomena (unidentified flying objects).
