Tensions peak between Netanyahu and senior Israeli army commanders
Israeli media reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t yet met with the resigned Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, for more than two weeks, despite the Prime Minister’s Office previously announcing their agreement to hold a meeting soon.
According to the Israeli Makan website, “Netanyahu’s office had issued a statement last January, after Halevi announced his resignation due to the failures of October 7, stating that the prime minister thanked the chief of staff for his long years of service and his leadership of the army during the war,” adding that the two “agreed to meet in the coming days,” which has not happened yet.
Makan website quoted political and security sources as saying that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz were seeking to replace Halevi as soon as possible.
The Chief of Staff informed the Minister of Security of his intention to officially end his duties on March 6, 2025, after completing the exchange deal, the first phase of which is expected to end on March 1.
Netanyahu appointed Major General (res.) Eyal Zamir as Halevi’s successor.
