Syrian Transitional President congratulates Syrians on the lifting of US sanctions on Syria and thanks Trump and several leaders
Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa congratulated the people of his country on the lifting of sanctions on Friday evening, and thanked US President Donald Trump and the leaders of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Qatar for their role in achieving this.
This came in a short video published by the Syrian president on his account on X.
Sharia’s words came after Trump signed on Thursday the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a provision to repeal sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act.
In the video, Sharaa said: “The great Syrian people, I address you today from the foot of Mount Qasioun (in the capital Damascus) to congratulate and thank you for the lifting of sanctions on Syria… Today will be the first day for Syria without sanctions, thanks to God Almighty, and then with your efforts and patience for 14 years”.
He added: “Many thanks to everyone who sacrificed and remained patient during the blessed period of the Syrian revolution… To all those who inhaled the chemical weapons, to all those who emigrated and left their land, to all those who drowned in the seas, and to the blood of the martyrs whose blood watered this blessed land until we reached this great victory, and it was crowned by the grace of God Almighty that the restrictions on Syria were completely lifted”.
He thanked President Trump “for his response to the Syrian people’s call for the lifting of sanctions, and for the appreciation of members of Congress for the sacrifices of the Syrian people and their response to their call for the lifting of sanctions on Syria”.
The Syrian president also thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
Sharaa also thanked “all Arab, Islamic and European countries that supported the Syrian people during their war period, and also supported them by lifting sanctions against them in the past year”.
He said: “The great Syrian people today is your day, the time of pain is gone and the time of construction has begun… Hand in hand, we are building this country until we reach the highest ranks”.
During the Saudi crown prince’s visit to Washington last November, Trump said at a press conference at the White House: “Prince Mohammed bin Salman called me and clearly asked for the lifting of sanctions on Syria because he wants it to rise again, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked me to do the same”.
