With the escape of most of the former Syrian regime’s leaders, intelligence documents emerged revealing the policies of Assad’s regime, both foreign and domestic, and its involvement in bombings and assassinations that were blamed on groups linked to the Syrian opposition at the time.

One of these documents, issued on May 8, 2012 by the Foreign Intelligence Service, revealed an order to carry out an explosion in the Qazzaz area of Damascus with the aim of convincing local and international public opinion of the presence of armed terrorist gangs.

The document included a request to carry out a suicide bombing with a car bomb during rush hour, while delaying the arrival of the media to the site to prevent the discovery that the bombing was planned.

Another document, dated March 1, 2015, orders the execution of 2,459 Alawite soldiers, informing their families that they were “martyred in battle,” for not complying with military orders.

The document also included the detention of 1,796 soldiers, informing their families that they were kidnapped.

Among the leaked documents, the involvement of Syrian intelligence in the assassination of Saria Hassoun, the son of the former Grand Mufti of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad Badr al Din Hassoun, was revealed.

One of the documents indicated that the Special Tasks Branch of the Air Force Intelligence 291 assigned a colonel to carry out the assassination on the morning of September 29, 2011, using a civilian car.

The documents also revealed the extravagance of the Assad family, as one of them showed Maher al Assad’s daily expenses, including paying large sums to a Russian trainer to train his daughter Sham in horse riding, at a time when the regime was claiming that US and European sanctions were harming the daily lives of Syrians.
