Syrian Army military post in Qamishli airport blocks US forces from pass forcing them to go back
The Syrian military forces concerned with protecting the Qamishli International Airport in Hasakeh Governorate, northeastern Syria, cut the road in front of an US convoy that was passing through the area.
The source, who requested anonymity, said that the forces that prevented the crossing of the American military convoy belonged to the Syrian Air Force Intelligence, indicating that they had forced the American units to return.
The Qamishli International Airport area is currently host to units of the Russian military police as well as elements of the Syrian forces.
The Russian military police implement patrols from this region, according to a memorandum of understanding concluded on December 22nd with Turkey to reduce the escalation in northeastern Syria in light of the Turkish “Spring of Peace” operation against the Kurdish “People’s Protection Units”.
The Memorandum of Understanding provides for the withdrawal of Kurdish militants from the border lands between the two countries to a depth of 30 km south, and the deployment of units of the Russian military police and Syrian border guards forces in the lands adjacent to the operation area of the “Spring of Peace”.
This memo comes at a time when the United States is redeploying its forces in northeastern Syria, where it recently announced the end of the process of withdrawing its forces in the region, which included 600 military personnel with more than a thousand others remaining to maintain control of the Syrian oil fields.
