Syrian air defenses are responding to an Israeli attack targeting a military point in Palmyra

The Syrian official news agency (SANA) announced that the air defenses of the Syrian army shot down a number of Israeli missiles on the evening of the city of Palmyra in the center of the country.

“Our air defense media responded to an Israeli missile attack in the sky of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of Homs and dropped a number of enemy missiles before reaching their targets,” Sana said.

For its part, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Israeli planes fired missiles at Lebanese airspace at “military gatherings of Iranian militias in the desert of Palmyra…, without information on casualties so far.”

In response to a question by Agence France Presse, an IDF spokesperson declined to comment.

Since the conflict broke out in Syria in 2011, the Israeli army has launched hundreds of raids in this country, targeting mainly Syrian army sites and Iranian and other targets for the Lebanese Hezbollah, but the Jewish state has rarely adopted these raids.

On March 31, SANA reported that Syrian air defenses had responded to missiles fired by Israeli warplanes from Lebanese airspace at targets in the center of the country, confirming, “a number of these missiles were dropped before they reached their targets.”

On that day, the observatory said that the Israeli bombing targeted the Al Shayrat airbase in Homs, indicating that this military airport is stationed with Iranian forces.

On March 5, Syrian air defenses defended Israeli missiles in the south and center of the country.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the bombing targeted two military airports, one of which is Al Shayrat airbase.

Israel reiterates that it will continue to respond to what it describes as Iranian attempts to establish the military presence of the Islamic Republic in Syria and to send advanced weapons to Hezbollah.
