The republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were the same as Georgia as former Soviet Union republics, and Ossetia was a province associated with its northern part that is still inside Russian borders.
During the Soviet Union era, Georgian Soviet leader Joseph Stalin separated Abkhazia, divided Ossetia into two parts, and annexed the southern part of Ossetia along with Abkhazia to Georgia, separating the both states from its northern Caucasus region, so both become part of Georgia under the Soviet Union.
It is known that the inhabitants of the two republics are part of the population of the Northern Caucasus, which is currently within the territory of the Russian Federation in addition to the Republic of Adygea, Karachay-cherkessia, Kabardino Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya and the Republic of Dagestan.
When the Soviet Union collapsed and the independence of a number of republics from the Soviet Union was declared, Georgia was one of the republics that declared independence from the Soviet Union. In 1991, both republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared their independence as well.
Georgia declared war in orfer to force the both countries to remain in Georgia, the war continued from 1991 to early 1994.
After 1994, Abkhazia and South Ossetia remained independent of Georgia, and Georgia was unable to annex the two republics by force as a result of its failure to enter the territory of the two countries.
In 2008, Russia recognized the independence of the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia after Georgia tried in the same year to re-establish its control over the two republics using military force, which required Russia’s military intervention to support the two republics government and prevent Georgia from reoccupying its territory.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia have received international recognition only from the countries of Russia, Syria, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Mauro, where most Western countries refused to recognize the independence of the two republics in support of the Georgian position against Russia, without taking into consideration the right and the struggle of those two countries, and ignoring the historical suffering of the peoples of the two countries for their independence, such as the rest of the former Soviet republics.
