A poll has revealed that 67% of Germans expect relations between Germany and the United States to deteriorate after Trump takes office as US president.

According to the poll conducted by the YouGov institute for the German Press Agency (dpa), only 8% of Germans believe that relations will improve under Trump, while another 17% believe that the relationship between the two countries – partners in NATO and the G7 – will remain roughly the same.

There are concerns in Germany that Trump will impose tariffs on German imports and that this could have a particularly strong impact on the export-oriented German economy.

Against this backdrop, 68% of the 2,078 people surveyed between January 10 and 14 expect a Trump presidency to harm the German economy, while 12% don’t expect any significant impact.

Only 6% of those surveyed believe it could benefit Germany.

Most of those surveyed also don’t believe that Trump can end the Russian war against Ukraine in the next six months, as he has previously stated.

65% said they don’t expect this, while 24% said they think it might work, while 11% didn’t provide opinion.
