The Israeli army announced that one of its military bases in the occupied Syrian Golan was stormed and large quantities of weapons were stolen from it last night, Saturday.

A military statement stated that the al Sawbar base was raided by unknown persons who seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition, and that teams from the General Security Service Shin Bet and the police are participating in the investigation, combing and search operations.

Another base in the Negev region had been stormed and about 30,000 bullets seized last month.

The Israeli army and security authorities are concerned that these weapons and ammunition will go to armed groups of the Palestinian resistance in the occupied West Bank.

In recent years, military bases belonging to the occupation army have witnessed dozens of thefts of weapons and ammunition, especially those in the south.

During the past month, the Israeli army announced the storming of the Sde Teman base in the Negev region and the theft of about 30,000 rifle bullets.

More than a year ago, the Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said that unknown persons infiltrated an ammunition depot at an army training base in the northern Negev, and seized more than 93,000 rounds.

It added that the theft took place at the army’s national training center near a kibbutz (cooperative farm) called Tzelim, a sprawling camp that has seen dozens of weapons thefts over the past decade.

At the time, there was talk of one of the largest thefts of ammunition in the history of the Israeli army, which included more than 93,000 5.56 mm rounds, according to the same source.

To break into the ammunition depot of the ground forces, the thieves took advantage of several security holes in the protection system, and were aware of the security procedures in place.

Within a few minutes, hundreds of boxes of ammunition were loaded onto cars, in preparation for selling them for millions of shekels in the crime market in Israel, according to the same source.
