Spanish Prime Minister calls on West not to double standards in Ukraine and Gaza wars
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Washington on Wednesday, called on the West not to follow a policy of double standards in the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Sanchez, who has become a fierce critic of EU Israel, made the remarks on the sidelines of a NATO summit at which NATO leaders announced new aid to Kiev.
“If we tell our people that we support Ukraine because we stand up for international law, we have to do the same with regard to Gaza,” Sanchez said.
He called on the socialist prime minister to adopt a firm political position on the issue, without following a policy of double standards.
“We must create conditions for an immediate and urgent ceasefire,” he said, warning of the risk of escalation on the border with Lebanon.
Spain has emerged in recent months as one of the most critical voices within the EU of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
At the end of May, Sanchez’s government, along with Ireland and Norway, recognized the state of Palestine, a move that angered Israel.
