Slovenia announce its intention to join South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon announced that her country intends to join the lawsuit filed by South Africa against the occupation at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
The lawsuit accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The Fajon said that the Slovenian Foreign Ministry recommended that the government join the discussions in The Hague, and Slovenia intends to present its position on February 23.
This comes in the context of Slovenia’s unique support for South Africa, which is the only country in Europe that has decided to do so, and joins other European countries such as Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Malta in criticizing the Israeli occupation because of its war against Gaza.
In sessions in January 2024, the International Court of Justice considered the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide crimes against the Palestinians in Gaza.
The Slovenian Foreign Minister’s official statement indicates Slovenia’s effective interaction with the case, and its aspiration to present its positions before the International Court.
This step comes in the context of escalating tensions and international criticism of Israel due to the devastating attack it launched on Gaza since October 2023, which resulted in a large number of deaths and injuries, and caused in the displacement of thousands of residents.
