Sharaa to meet Trump in the White House on Monday
The US presidency announced that President Donald Trump will meet his Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al Sharaa, next Monday at the White House.
White House spokeswoman Caroline LaVette said in a press briefing Tuesday regarding the meeting between the two presidents: “I can confirm that this meeting will take place on Monday at the White House”.
She added: “This is part of the diplomatic efforts the President is making to meet with everyone around the world to achieve peace”.
Levitt noted that President Trump took a historic step by lifting sanctions on Syria during his visit to the Middle East, indicating that the administration had made significant progress on this issue.
Trump and Sharaa are expected to discuss bilateral and regional issues, foremost among them the lifting of US sanctions on Syria.
Last week, the US State Department announced in a statement its support for Congress’s repeal of the Caesar Act, which includes sanctions against Syria.
Last Sunday, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani announced that President Sharaa would arrive in the United States during November, in what would be the first visit of its kind by a Syrian president to Washington since the country’s independence in 1946.
