The Pentagon said Wednesday that the US judiciary has struck agreements with September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohamed and two other defendants to plead guilty to the charges.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the specific terms and conditions of pretrial agreements aren’t publicly available at this time.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that a senior Pentagon official had approved the deal under which Khalid Sheikh Mohamed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al Hawsawi would plead guilty in exchange for not being sentenced to death.

All three have been detained since 2003.

Khalid Sheikh Mohamed was an al Qaeda member and is accused by the United States of being the main planner of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon building on the outskirts of Washington.

The New York Times reported that lead prosecutor Aaron Rogge said in a letter to family members of the victims of the September 11 attacks in exchange for eliminating the possibility of the death penalty, the three defendants agreed to plead guilty to all crimes attributed to them, including the murder of 2,976 people as listed in the indictment.

The letter said the three could make their guilty pleas early as next week.

The Pentagon issued a statement saying prosecutors had reached plea agreements with Khalid Sheikh Mohamed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al Hawsawi, without disclosing the terms of those agreements.
