At least 16 people were injured in a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Tuesday evening, according to the regional governor.

In a post on social media, Governor Oleg Sinigubov said Russian strikes hit residential buildings in the city center, wounding at least 16 people, including two in serious condition.

He added that according to preliminary information, the city was hit by two S-300 missiles.

Kharkiv, located only 30 kilometers from the border with Russia in northeastern Ukraine, has been subjected to repeated bombardment since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

After the strikes, the city’s mayor said that some residential buildings had been destroyed and there were no military targets in the area.

Earlier Tuesday, the authorities urged about three thousand residents in more than twenty villages near the front line in the Greater Kharkiv District to evacuate, citing the escalation of Russian attacks in the region.

Russian forces seized vast areas of the Kharkiv region shortly after they began their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and are continuing their efforts to control the region despite suffering field losses there.
