Russia expects new cooperation agreement with Iran in the very near future
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said in an interview with local Russian media that Moscow expects to sign a new comprehensive cooperation agreement with Iran in the very near future.
“We expect this agreement to be signed in the very near future, as work on the text is already nearing completion; All the required wording has been reached”.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said earlier this month that work on the agreement had been temporarily suspended, while Iran said there was no halt in the preparation of the new agreement.
Russia and Iran signed a 20-year strategic agreement in 2001, which was automatically extended in 2020 for five years.
The two sides also agreed in 2020 to work on a new agreement to replace the old document.
The 2001 agreement called for cooperation in the fields of security and energy projects, including the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the construction of nuclear power plants, industry and technology, according to its text posted on the Kremlin’s website.
Very few details were revealed about what the new deal would include.
Russia and Iran have strengthened investment, military and energy ties after Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and sanctions imposed by Kiev’s allies on Moscow.
