Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said his country welcomes the peace process in Syria.

This came in press statements made on Wednesday in the Kazakh capital Astana, which hosts the 24th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, with the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Peskov added that Erdogan and Putin hold a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai summit in Astana, noting that the meeting will be held based on the mutual desire of the two leaders.

The meeting between the two presidents will be prolonged, noting that it will be at the level of delegations, but President Putin prefers to move to bilateral meetings also from time to time.

On the content of the meeting, the Russian spokesman said that he will discuss all issues of concern to common interests, foremost of which are bilateral relations, and the files of Syria and Ukraine.

The two leaders are scheduled to discuss Putin’s upcoming visit to Turkey and agree on a timetable.

He pointed out that there is political will on the part of Ankara and Moscow to resolve the issues and outstanding problems between them.

Regarding President Erdogan’s remarks on Syria, Peskov said Moscow welcomed the peace process in Syria and was making great efforts in this regard.

“We welcome contacts with neighboring countries that will develop this process,” Peskov said.

“Everyone opposes terrorism, and we will cooperate in this field with all countries, including the Republic of Türkiye,” he added.

Turkish President Erdogan said last week that there was no reason not to establish relations between Türkiye and Syria, expressing Ankara’s readiness to improve relations with Damascus.
