Russia: Authorities detained a US-Russian Dual National on charges of Nazi rehabilitation
A judicial department in the city of St. Petersburg said on Saturday that a man with dual US and Russian citizenship was placed in detention pending trial on charges of “Nazi rehabilitation” in two posts he made on social media.
The accusation against Yuri Malev came due to two publications in which he was said to have disparaged the St. George Ribbon, a symbol of courage in the Russian military.
One of the posts contained obscene words, while the other showed a photo of a corpse wearing the tape.
The judicial department said this showed a lack of respect for society and an insult to the memory of the Great Patriotic War, which is the name Russians give to World War II.
The US State Department said it was aware of the detention but had no comment on the case.
Malev’s representatives could not be reached for comment.
The department said in a statement that Malev, who was arrested in St. Petersburg, Friday, partially admitted his guilt, but didn’t provide details.
Malev was placed in detention until February 7.
