Rubio hints on Cuba to be the next target after Venezuela
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sparked a new controversy after he suggested that President Donald Trump’s administration could move toward targeting Cuba following the military operation that ended with the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
“If I were an official in the Cuban government, I would feel a little worried,” Rubio said in his remarks, stressing that anyone who lives in Havana and holds a government position “must be a little worried”.
The United States has a long record of interventions in Latin America, most notably its support for the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, when Cuban exiles tried to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro in an unsuccessful operation.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez expressed his country’s full solidarity with Venezuela and denounced what he described as “American piracy,” referring to the naval blockade imposed by Washington off the Venezuelan coast for allegedly targeting boats involved in drug smuggling.
In a social media post in mid-December, Díaz-Canel said: “The naval blockade imposed by the United States to pressure the Venezuelan authorities is arbitrary and illegal, and is an act of piracy that blatantly disregards international law”.
