Raising the Palestinian Flag in Front of the Parliament of Slovenia
The Palestinian flag was raised Wednesday in the garden of Slovenia’s parliament, following the country’s official recognition of the state of Palestine.
The Palestinian flag was hoisted alongside the flags of other countries in the Parliament Park in the capital Ljubljana.
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said in a post on the X platform that her country was witnessing a historic day.
“Slovenia has become the 147th state to officially recognize the state of Palestine,” she said.
Fajon said recognizing Palestine is an expression of her country’s commitment to peace and justice.
“We’re taking a place on the right side of history by contributing to a two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli) for a lasting peace”.
The Slovenian government held a session last week to discuss the decision to recognize the state of Palestine, and Prime Minister Robert Golob said after the session, that his country decided to recognize the state of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state on the 1967 borders in accordance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
He added at the time that the government would refer the decision to parliament and ask for support from lawmakers.
On Tuesday, 52 members of the 90-member parliament voted in favor of recognizing the state of Palestine, while Democratic Party deputies left the session.
