Putin: There are positive conditions for a strict and long-term settlement in Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in phone call, Friday evening, the latest developments on the Syria.
The Kremlin said in a statement that the call included a detailed review of issues related to the Syrian crisis, focusing on the implementation of the decisions of the Quartet summit between Russia, Turkey, Germany and France, held on October 27 in Istanbul.
“Putin stressed that the work done by the guarantors of the Astana process and the formation of the list of members of the Constitutional Committee creates appropriate conditions for a long and long-term settlement in Syria”, according to the Kremlin statement.
The two leaders also discussed US plans to withdraw troops from Syria, as well.
Putin and Merkel, according to the Kremlin, exchanged views on “the situation caused by the Ukrainian provocation in the Kerch Strait on Nov. 25”, and some of them joined on New Year’s Day, agreeing to continue bilateral contacts.
The Kremlin statement said that the Russian Security Council, headed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussed the country’s social and economic agenda and a number of international issues, including the latest developments in Syria.
President spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the statement, that the Russian Security Council has positively assessed the continuation of the forces of the Syrian government, which is working to expand the territories under its control, and its role in the future of the settlement in the country.
