Possible agreements that the Syrian transitional president will sign during his expected visit to Washington and Israel describes Sharaa as a dictator
Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, a close associate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said during a conference in Las Vegas that he had made direct contacts in recent months with Syrian officials, adding sarcastically that “Sharaa reminds him of the character played by actor Sacha Baron Cohen in the movie (The Dictator).
In a related context, US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack revealed at the Manama Dialogue conference in Bahrain that the United States is overseeing a fifth round of security and border negotiations between Syria and Israel, noting that progress is tangible and that the goal is to reach a comprehensive de-escalation agreement.
Barrack added that the head of the transitional phase, Ahmed al Sharaa, will visit Washington soon, as part of efforts to discuss new security arrangements and ways for Syria to engage in the international coalition against terrorism, in a move that shows Washington’s desire to reintegrate Damascus into the regional system.
Israeli media also indicated that the United States is working on engineering a new regional security understanding that includes Syria and Israel, with Gulf support, in preparation for a phase aimed at stabilizing southern Syria and reintegrating Damascus into the regional and international systems.
