Niger and Türkiye signed a Declaration of Intent in Oil and Gas

Niger and Türkiye have signed a bilateral declaration of intent on cooperation in the field of oil and natural gas, aimed at supporting and encouraging Turkish companies in the development of Niger’s oil and natural gas fields, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

The agreement, signed on the sidelines of a high-level Turkish-Nigerian meeting in the capital Niamey, provided for more dialogue between relevant institutions and companies in the two countries.

The Turkish delegation included the ministers of foreign affairs, energy and natural resources, and defense, the head of the intelligence service, the head of the Turkish Presidential Defense Industries Corporation, and the assistant minister of trade.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the delegation he was leading had discussed with Nigerien authorities “what can be done to improve the defense and intelligence industry in the fight against terrorism… The main source of instability in the Sahel region”.

Fidan added that cooperation between his country and African countries continues intensively in areas such as diplomacy, economy and finance, security and defense, education and health.

The head of Turkish diplomacy spoke at a press conference after his meetings with the Nigerien official authorities, that the meetings were very fruitful.

“Peace, security and stability in Africa are among the priorities of Türkiye, especially in the Sahel region, where the problem of instability and terrorism has become chronic”, Fidan said.

For his part, Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zein welcomed the dynamic of cooperation with Türkiye, especially in the field of defense, adding that his country should have all the necessary means to ensure its defense.
