Mark Milley takes over as US chief of staff to succeed Dunford

The commander of the US Army’s ground forces, Mark Milley, took over on Monday as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing General Joseph Dunford.

The handover ceremony took place at Mir-Anderson, Virginia, in the presence of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, as well as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

In a speech at the ceremony, Trump made it clear that they had made the US military the strongest army in world history.

Dunford’s ideas had an impact on this success.

In July, the US Senate approved the appointment of Milley, 61, as the new chief of staff.

He has served as commander of ground forces since 2015, along with various positions in several countries including Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dunford took over as head chief of staff in 2015 after being appointed by former President Barack Obama.
