Mali: Goita promotes 20 senior officers to generals
Mali’s interim President Assimi Goita has issued a decree promoting 20 of the country’s top officers from different sectors of the defense and security forces and elsewhere to the rank of general.
According to local Malian media, those promoted were holding leadership, administrative and strategic political positions in the Malian state.
They include Famuki Camara, Chief of Staff of the National Guard, Mohamed Ali Oisson, Commander-in-Chief of the Police Brigade, Ali Andji, Governor of Nyoro Region, and Colonel Mamadou Messaouile Samaki, Superintendent General of Police.
The list also included Major Nima Sagara of the Air Force and Nana Sangari of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Armed Forces.
The promotions also included Colonel Major Abbas Dembélé of the Land Forces, the current Governor of Mopti State, and Amara Doumbia, who also belongs to the Land Forces and is the head of the regional executive of the Nara region.
Among those promoted to the rank of General Nohom Ouattara of the National Guard Sector, Faraban Sangari of the General Directorate of Military Engineering, Sidou Kamisoukou of the General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie and Malik Yero Deko of the Air Force.
These promotions come weeks after the conclusion of the National Dialogue in Mali, and in addition to extending the transitional period for two to five years, its recommendations included the promotion of Colonels Assimi Goïta, Malik Diaw, Sadio Camara, Ismail Waghi, Modibo Kony and Abdoulaye Maiga to the rank of general.
All of them hold leadership positions in the transitional phase, which began since the coup of August, 2020 against the late civilian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, followed by a coup on May, 2021 against retired military transitional President Bah N’Daw, after which Colonel Assimi Goita himself officially assumed the presidency of the country in June 2021.
