The Kremlin announced that a tripartite summit of Russia, Turkey and Iran on Syria will be held next month in Turkey, and that one step in fact remained to complete the formation of the constitutional committee.

“Although the work is nearing completion, we are in fact one step away from finalizing the work on a constitutional commission”. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, recently expressed Moscow’s hope that the first meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee could be held in September in Geneva.

A decision to form a committee to draft a new Syrian constitution was made at the Syrian National Dialogue conference in Sochi, Russia, in late January 2018, and discussions are still ongoing over its membership.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced earlier that the tripartite summit between Russia, Turkey and Iran on Syria will be held on September 11 in Ankara.

The heads of state of the guarantors of the Astana conference, Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian Vladimir Putin and Iranian Hassan Rouhani, held more than one summit on Syria, most recently in the Russian city of Sochi, in mid-February.
