Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russia now needs to establish relations with the Syrian government, noting that Moscow has its own interests in Syria and needs to secure these interests through dialogue.

Peskov told RT that Russia stresses the need to engage with those in positions of de facto power in Syria.

Regarding US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa and the lifting of sanctions on Syria, Peskov noted that Moscow is building relations with the current Syrian leadership, and the Americans are doing the same, so this is completely understandable.

He explained that Russia needs to build relations so that the Syrian people can finally achieve the peace and stability they deserve, so that Syria remains a unified state.

Peskov asserted that what happened in Syria actually happened, partly due to external influence, but also due to internal processes, noting that the Assad regime “collapsed like a giant with feet of clay”.
