Izvestia: Syria is ready to restore relations with Türkiye
Russian Izvestia newspaper, posted article by Ilnar Baynazarov, talking about the reasons for the rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus.
The article stated: Syria is ready to restore relations with Türkiye, provided that Ankara ends its occupation of northern Syria and does not provide support to terrorist groups on Syrian territory.
This was stated to Izvestia, the head of the International Committee in the Syrian Parliament, Boutros Marjane.
Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated that Türkiye isn’t seeking to isolate Syrian President Bashar al Assad, and his Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu made it clear that there are no preconditions for resuming dialogue with the neighboring country.
On August 11, Davutoglu further clarified the situation, saying: “Ankara supports political reconciliation between the Syrian opposition and the Assad regime”.
This is a radical change in the approach of the Turkish leadership.
Yasar Niazbayev, author of the “Turkish Agenda” channel on Telegram, believes that there are positive developments in relations between Ankara and Damascus, which are real, and that Erdogan now has two main reasons for rapprochement with Syria: Syrian refugees and Kurdish separatists.
On the Kurdish issue, Niazbayev explained that Erdogan’s main task is to secure Turkey’s southern border from the bombing of the Kurdistan Workers Party, whose fighters are hiding in northern Syria.
“In this regard, Erdogan and the opposition agree that the best way to secure the southern border is not a military invasion, but rather negotiation with Damascus,” he said.
According to Turkish political researcher Dr. Kerim Has, rapprochement with Damascus may be necessary for President Erdogan from an electoral point of view.
He told Izvestia: “Erdogan is not counting on a result in the near future, nor on a complete restoration of relations with Syria, but on proving that he is able to solve the refugee problem in Türkiye by restoring relations with Damascus”.
At the same time, according to Dr. Kerim Has, the Turkish leader won’t rush to deliver on his promises – he simply won’t have time for it.
