Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that the fall of President Bashar al Assad was a “historic day in the Middle East”, welcoming the disintegration of the “central link in the axis of evil led by Iran, the Jewish state’s arch-enemy”.

“This is a direct result of the strikes we have struck against Iran and Hezbollah, the main backers” of the Syrian president, Netanyahu said.

“This has created a chain reaction throughout the Middle East for all those who want to be free from this regime of oppression and tyranny”.

Netanyahu also said that Israeli forces had taken control of a buffer zone in the Golan Heights, which was defined under a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria.

Netanyahu spoke on Sunday after an advance by opposition forces in Syria ended the rule Assad.

Netanyahu said the decades-old agreement had collapsed, adding that Syrian forces had abandoned their positions, necessitating Israeli control.
