Israeli poll: The opposition will win a majority and can form a government

An Israeli opinion poll released Sunday evening showed that if elections were held “today,” the opposition bloc led by Naftali Bennett would win a majority and could form a government.

This poll was conducted by the private Midgam Institute for the Israeli Channel 12, which published its results.

The results revealed that the opposition bloc, led by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s “Bennett 2026” party, would win 62 of the 120 seats in the Knesset.

While the current ruling coalition bloc, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will win 48 seats.

These results mean that the opposition bloc can form a government, as any bloc (a group of political parties) needs 61 seats to form a government.

The poll showed that Bennett’s party alone would win 22 seats, compared to 21 for Netanyahu’s Likud party.

Meanwhile, the far-right Religious Zionism party, led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, will fail to pass the electoral threshold, meaning it will not win a single seat.

The opposition Democrats party, led by Yair Golan, will come in third place with 13 seats.

This comes despite Golan’s recent controversial statements, in which he said that Israel is an irrational state that kills (Palestinian) children as a hobby.

The survey sample size was 500 participants, who voted electronically or by phone, with a margin of error of 4%.

In a poll published by the same channel last Friday, 50% of Israelis said they feared the government would cancel the next elections in 2026, claiming that the emergency situation doesn’t allow them to be held.

For more than a year, Netanyahu has been refusing opposition calls to resign his government and hold early elections.

The opposition accuses him of failing to manage the war on the Gaza Strip and return prisoners, and of clinging to the war to remain in power.
