Israel: Shin Bet chief intends to resign

Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar intends to resign from his position in the coming weeks, Israel’s Channel 12 reported Monday morning.
Bar is scheduled to submit his testimony to the Supreme Court early next week, and according to his statements, he will set a date for his resignation, which he says will be in several weeks.
Channel 12 cited statements made by Bar on at least two occasions in recent days, which addressed recent tensions between him and the government and its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the decision to dismiss him from his position.
The Supreme Court overruled the decision, ruling that he would continue to serve until a further ruling is issued on the petitions submitted regarding his dismissal.
Bar sharply criticized Netanyahu, stressing the need to appoint a suitable head for the General Security Service and form an official commission of inquiry.
He also highlighted the importance of continuing the legal battle over his tenure and the repercussions for the agency.
Bar is scheduled to testify before the Supreme Court early next week, and according to his statements, he will set a date for his resignation, which he says will be several weeks away.
In this context, Israel’s Channel 13 reported that the Supreme Court has left room for negotiations on the decision to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet, but the government is determined to implement its decision.
The Israeli channel stated that the government’s action plan to dismiss Bar will be implemented after the end of Passover, as Netanyahu’s position is to complete the process unilaterally and not enter into negotiations with the attorney general or reach an agreement with Bar regarding the timing of his resignation.
