ISIS-Khorasan and the motive of their attack in Moscow

ISIS Khorasan claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred in Moscow on Friday evening, which resulted in the killing and wounding of a large number of people in a concert hall on the outskirts of the Russian capital.

A US official confirmed that the United States possesses information that supports what ISIS Khorasan announced regarding its claim of responsibility for the attack, while Russian media referred to a statement from a spokesman for the Investigative Committee in Moscow stating that it’s still too early to talk about the fate of the attackers.

The name of the ISIS-K “Khorasan” comes from the region that includes Afghanistan and Pakistan, where ISIS Khorasan was founded in 2015 by former members of the Taliban movement.

The organization saw the number of its fighters decline by almost half by 2021 due to US airstrikes and Afghan operations that led to the deaths of many of its leaders.

The organization’s name became more prominent after the fall of the government of Afghanistan to the Taliban in 2021, when it carried out a suicide attack at Kabul airport in August 2021 that killed 13 UA soldiers and up to 170 civilians.

Last January, ISIS Khorasan claimed responsibility for an attack that killed 84 people in Kerman, Iran, during a memorial procession for an Iranian leader killed in a US raid in 2020.

The attacks launched by ISIS Khorasan appear to be aimed at creating chaos and confusion in the region.

Analysts point out that ISIS Khorasan’s interest in Russia comes in the context of the escalation of the organization’s terrorist operations, and can be linked to Russian interventions in the region, especially in Syria.

In Moscow, the Russian security authorities announced the arrest of 11 people, on suspicion of their involvement in the terrorist attack that targeted the Crocus City Hall shopping complex.

Among the detainees, there are 4 people who directly participated in the attack.

The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that 4 of these people were arrested in Bryansk Province, near the border with Ukraine, due to their role in the terrorist attack.

The FSB reported that the suspects in the attack were planning to cross the Russian-Ukrainian border and were communicating with people on the Ukrainian side.

The Chairman of the Defense Committee in the State Duma stressed that the response to the attack must be strong if the link between the perpetrators and the Ukrainians is confirmed.

The attack that occurred on Friday evening, for which ISIS claimed responsibility, has killed 115 people so far, according to the Investigation Committee.

The attack occurred after an armed attack on a concert in the mall, and the attack caused a large fire after gunfire broke out.
