Iranian politician demands that the next Syrian government pay Syria’s debts to Iran
Former head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, said on Tuesday that any new government in Syria must pay its debts to Iran.
“Due to security issues, it may not be possible to determine the exact amount that Syria owes Iran, but based on the general estimates I made when I was in parliament, the number is between $20 and $30 billion, because there were conflicting reports about this $10 billion, but what is certain is $20 billion,” he added in a statement published by Iranian media.
He said, “I believe that there is a necessary mechanism to collect this debt according to international law, and after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s government, the responsibility of collecting this debt from the Syrians won’t be lifted… Now, after the change of government in Syria, Iran must clearly document this request, and according to international law, the new political and administrative structure in Syria is obligated to pay this debt to the Iranian people”.
