Iran is building what it calls its first defensive tunnel inside the capital’s metro system, state media reported Tuesday, without specifying what the defensive measures were.

“For the first time in the country, a tunnel with defensive functions is being built in Tehran,” Jafar Chakri, head of the city council’s transportation committee, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

“This tunnel follows the path between the Health Defenders and Imam Khomeini Hospital metro stations, and provides direct access through the tunnel to this medical center,” he added.

The announcement comes amid tensions between Iran and Israel.

Israeli warplanes struck military sites in Iran on October 26 in response to a major Iranian missile attack on Israel earlier that month.

Iran announced that it fired 200 missiles at Israel on October 1 in response to the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, along with a Revolutionary Guard commander in an Israeli raid south of Beirut, and Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in an operation in Tehran attributed to Israel.
