Recent reports indicate that Iran has acquired an advanced Chinese laser defense system.

This system may be the Shen Nung Shield 3000/5000 known as the “Silent Hunter” made by China.

This Chinese advanced system is believed to be intended for low-altitude defense, where it can target drones and other low-flying objects.

The Silent Hunter is an electro-optic laser system with a power ranging from 30 to 100 kilowatts, giving it the ability to engage targets at various distances and altitudes.

It has an operational range of up to 4 kilometers and is effective in penetrating armored targets such as 10 mm thick steel, making it ideal for protecting vital installations.

Iran’s acquisition of this advanced technology is seen as part of enhancing its defense capabilities, especially against low-altitude aerial threats such as drones.

This military cooperation with China represents an additional step towards deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries, which was confirmed in the 25-year comprehensive cooperation agreement signed in 2021.

This agreement includes extensive military and technical exchanges between the two countries, including joint training, intelligence sharing, and technology transfer.

One of the main advantages of laser systems is their high ability to deal with drones thanks to their accuracy and low operating costs.

Lasers can destroy drones by targeting their sensitive parts such as sensors and structural components, making them an ideal choice for dealing with swarms of small aircraft that are increasingly used in modern warfare.

This comes at a time when several major countries are developing advanced laser defense systems to counter drones and other growing air threats.

For example, the United States is developing high-energy laser systems such as the HELWS, while Israel is developing the “Iron Beam” to intercept drones, rockets and mortars, while Germany is also testing similar laser defense systems.

Iran’s possession of this type of system enhances its ability to protect its airspace, especially against advanced drones, which greatly reflects on regional security dynamics and indicates the development of military cooperation between Iran and China in a way that serves their common strategic interests.
