Hürriyet: A possible Erdogan-Assad meeting in Astana
A Turkish journalist expected that there will be a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian Bashar al Assad in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on the sidelines of the summit of leaders of the Shanghai Organization in the next two days.
Journalist Abdulkadir Selvi spoke about the possibility of this in an opinion piece in Hürriyet newspaper.
“I’ve searched reliable sources to find out the answer to this question: Will Erdogan meet Assad in Astana?” he said in his article.
No one said, “No, they won’t meet,” and no one said, “Yes, they will meet”.
“It was met with deep silence… This silence made me doubt… So, I felt the need to ask the question”.
“It seems that the backdoor diplomacy practiced by Russia has reached a certain stage… This meeting may take place in Astana or elsewhere… Of course, even when these crucial issues are known, they are kept until the last minute”.
Erdogan said a few days ago that he doesn’t rule out a meeting with Assad to help restore bilateral relations between the two countries.
