Hamas is open for long truce with Israel and ready to gives up its weapons in case of establishing a Palestinian state on the 1967 boarders
A high Hamas official announced to the Associated Press that Hamas movement is ready to accept a long-term truce with Israel of up to 5 years or more.
He stressed that Hamas is ready to give up its weapons and move to political action if an independent Palestinian state is established within the 1967 borders.
The Hamas official, Khalil al Hayya, said that Hamas wants to join the Palestine Liberation Organization led by the Fatah movement, with the aim of forming a unity government that brings together Gaza and the West Bank.
He explained that Hamas would accept the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to the right of return of Palestinian refugees based on international resolutions in accordance with the 1967 borders.
He stressed that if these conditions are met, the military wing of Hamas will be dissolved, adding that there are historical examples of movements that resisted occupations and when they gained independence they turned into political parties, and the armed forces that were defending them became part of the national army.
Hayya’s statements came in an interview on Wednesday amid a long pause in ceasefire talks.
The disarmament proposal is considered a fundamental shift on the part of Hamas, which has stated in the past its desire to “destroy Israel”.
However, it’s unlikely that Israel will take this scenario into consideration, especially after the October 7 attacks that prompted the Israeli leadership to pledge to eliminate Hamas.
The current Israeli government also strongly opposes the idea of establishing a Palestinian state.
Moreover, the United States used its veto in the Security Council against a resolution supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state, despite its continued calls for a two-state solution.
