The Israeli Haaretz newspaper reported on Sunday that at least 10 soldiers have committed suicide since the beginning of 2026, including 6 during April, in addition to two police officers, as a result of the consequences of the war in the Gaza Strip over the course of two years.

Haaretz said that in April, six active-duty soldiers committed suicide, bringing the number of suicides in the army since the beginning of the year to at least 10.

Two Israeli police officers also committed suicide during April, according to Haaretz, which did not specify their ranks.

The Israeli newspaper quoted soldiers and experts in the field of supporting those suffering from psychological trauma, pointing to a series of failures in the Israeli army.

The newspaper added: “Psychological support days for reserve soldiers have been cancelled, mental health officers are less present in the field, and commanders are not paying enough attention to early signs”.

According to Haaretz, sources in the Israeli army acknowledged that they face difficulty in taking effective steps to reduce this phenomenon, especially in cases where soldiers suffering from psychological distress do not seek treatment.

Haaretz confirmed that the increase in the number of suicides in the Israeli security establishment comes within a trend that began with the outbreak of the genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, on October 7, 2023.

According to a previous report by Haaretz, 22 soldiers in compulsory service committed suicide in 2025, the highest rate recorded in 15 years, without providing further details.

Israeli reports in recent months have indicated that the rise in suicides among soldiers is linked to the effects of the genocidal war in Gaza, which lasted two years starting on October 8, 2023.
