Data released by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office on Wednesday revealed that the number of children and adolescents under the age of 18 at risk of poverty approached 2.2 million people last year.

The office indicated that the rate of the poverty line among this segment reached 14.8%, indicating that the extent to which children and adolescents are at risk of poverty depends on the education of the parents, stressing that the so-called poverty line rate for children and adolescents of parents with low educational qualifications reached 37.6% last year.

In contrast, this percentage reached only 14.5% among children and adolescents of parents with intermediate educational qualifications, while the poverty line rate among children and adolescents of parents with higher qualifications didn’t exceed 6.7%.

It should be noted that the person threatened with poverty in Germany is someone who earns less than 60% of the average income of the entire population of the country, and last year this value reached 1250 euros per month for a person who lives alone and 2625 euros per month for parents who have two children under the age of 14 years old.

Less than two weeks ago, data from the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, revealed that more than a fifth of people in Germany cannot travel for a week’s holiday once a year.

The head of the parliamentary bloc of the German Left Party, Dietmar Bartsch, described the numbers of the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, as for at least one week annually.

Achieving this in Germany needs to increase wages, sufficient pensions, and a consistent policy to combat inflation and insure children against poverty.

It’s worth noting that these figures and percentages have changed dramatically over the past years compared to 2021, the situation has deteriorated somewhat, as the percentage of those who couldn’t spend a holiday for one week was only 19.9% in Germany in 2021, and it was much lower in 2017, when it reached 15.3% at that time, while it was high in 2011 at that time, it amounted to 22.8%.
