Germany is prosecuting a spy within the German intelligence service on charges of selling information to Russia
One of Germany’s most dangerous “traitors” is currently on trial, with Carsten L. (53) being tried for high treason before the 6th Criminal Court in Berlin.
Carsten L, who was a colonel in the German army and most recently ran the security department of the German intelligence service, is accused of selling classified information to the Russian intelligence agency FSB about the Ukraine war.
This case, which is expected to last until next summer, is considered one of the most difficult cases of treason in the history of the German Federal Republic.
It’s claimed that the damages resulting from this betrayal cannot be specifically measured.
According to the charges, Carsten L. and his partner in crime, diamond merchant Arthur E., were expected to receive more than €800,000 in payment for their actions.
It’s assumed that the crime caused enormous damage, as 40 volumes of secret files were revealed based on the results of investigations from the intelligence service and the federal prosecution.
Carsten L. was arrested on 21 December 2022 and has been in pretrial detention since then.
According to the information, there was a long investigation to uncover the potential informant within the ranks of the German intelligence service, and the decisive evidence came from an internal source in the service.
Carsten L. allegedly exfiltrated sensitive military content from a secret Russian chat group among Wagner mercenaries, resulting in the Russians losing control of their communication channel.
He is suspected of having passed this secret information to the Russian intelligence agency FSB.
According to investigators’ findings, Carsten L allegedly smuggled 73 printed pages of chat screenshots of conversations from the German intelligence service.
At a later stage, his accomplice Arthur E., who transferred secret documents to Moscow and received treason pay from Putin’s allies, was arrested.
Controversies remain about Carsten L.’s motives, as it’s assumed that his hatred of the German government’s asylum and economic policies drove him to commit this treason.
