German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on Friday for increased pressure on the US government regarding its negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

“By increasing pressure on the Americans, we want them to understand that they have a lot to lose if they don’t stand by the European liberal democracies,” Baerbock said in remarks during an election campaign in Potsdam.

Warning against blackmail regarding the Ukraine negotiations, Baerbock stressed that “the so-called peace isn’t peace, and peace that is based on blackmail or surrender is not peace, but quite the opposite, it means more readiness for war and violence”.

She pointed out that Germany will continue to support Ukraine as long as it needs it.

“No one can make a decision about war or peace without the Ukrainians or us Europeans… This is a clear position for Germany,” she continued.

The Russian-Ukrainian war is witnessing a shift in the US position after Donald Trump assumed the presidency.

Trump is seeking to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war quickly through negotiations.

On February 12, Trump announced that he had reached an agreement with Putin to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

In this context, the Saudi capital, Riyadh, hosted Russian-US talks on Tuesday that addressed relations between the two countries and ways to end the war in Ukraine, amid European confirmation that peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved without Europe.
