The German military said Saturday it will create a new military division dedicated to internal security, overseeing the security of vital infrastructure and key military facilities across the country.

The reorganization will take effect in April and will increase the number of German military divisions to four. Each division has a strength of 20,000 soldiers.

The new division won’t increase the total number of German troops, which stands at around 180,000 soldiers.

“The internal security division will be placed under the command of the army as of April 1, 2025,” a German army spokesman said in statements.

NATO has raised its alert level to its highest since the Cold War, with some officials, including German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, claiming that a Russian attack on the alliance’s borders could happen within four years.

The move by Germany will streamline command structures related to internal security, at a time when Berlin’s assessment of “Russian sabotage” against the country’s vital infrastructure has reached a new level, while, Russia denies the accusations.

There are currently 3 German military divisions that NATO can call upon in the event of a conflict, and their main mission will be to defend the alliance by engaging the enemy on the front lines.

The new Division will be tasked with defending Germany’s interior, which includes protecting infrastructure such as ports, railways and supply and deployment routes.
