German Defense Minister announces resignation
German Defense Minister Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen announced her resignation from the German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government to focus on the European Commission’s highest position in the European Union.
“I’ll ask for the confidence of the European Parliament, regardless of the outcome.
I’ll step down as defense minister next Wednesday so that I can serve Europe with all my might”, the press quoted von der Lien as saying in a tweet today.
The 60-year-old von der Leyen has been defense minister since 2013 and is the first woman in German history to hold the post.
