German Chancellor calls for cooperation in a multipolar world
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for broad international cooperation to tackle major global challenges.
“The idea of a bipolar age, where everything revolves around the United States and China, ignores global reality,” Scholz said in a government statement he made in the Bundestag on Wednesday.
“The world of the twenty-first century will be a multipolar world”.
Scholz said that in order to find solutions to major global issues such as climate protection, epidemics, biodiversity or digitization, not only supply chains, but also relationships around the world must be diversified.
Scholz explained that it is about close partnerships with emerging countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, adding that Europeans have a wide range of common values and interests with their most important global partner – the United States of America – but differences on some issues cannot be ruled out.
Scholz said that US investments in climate protection make an impressive contribution to the energy transition.
“But they shouldn’t impede fair competition,” he said, adding that instead of falling into major disagreements, they should cooperate more closely and strengthen common and fair trade with the United States.
Scholz said that China’s rise to a global power is a reality that must be dealt with, explaining that dealing with this fact shouldn’t be a disengagement, noting that China is still important as an economic and trade partner, and yet there are many global issues that must be dealt with.
