Fox News reported that the Pentagon is seeking to develop a new nuclear bomb 24 times more powerful than the one dropped on Japan, and it also intends to obtain Congressional approval and allocate funds for that.

Fox News explained that the United States has decided to manufacture nuclear weapons that will be 24 times more powerful than the bomb it dropped on Japan, and the Pentagon intends to obtain Congressional approval and allocate funds to develop the B61-13 nuclear bomb.

“Today’s announcement reflects the changing security environment and growing threats,” Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb said in a statement.

He added, “It’s the responsibility of the United States to continue to evaluate and deploy the capabilities we need to deter strategic attacks, reliably respond to them, if necessary, and reassure our allies”.

According to the Pentagon, “The B61-13 project will utilize the established production capabilities that support the previous B61-12 bomb project, with the modern safety, security and accuracy features of that munition, but with the much higher productivity of the B61-7 model”.

This announcement comes amid escalating tensions around the world, as the United States conducted a high-explosive test at a nuclear testing site in Nevada earlier this month.

The First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, confirmed earlier that if the United States conducts experiments in the state of Nevada, this is considered a step towards escalation on its part.
