Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will announce a new political party under his leadership
Turkish opposition media said that former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will announce his new political party on Friday, three months after he resigned from the Justice and Development Party.
He confirmed that some former political figures and some senior officials in the public sector will play roles in the new party, according to the Turkish newspaper Ahwal.
A spokesman for Davutoglu told German news agency DPA on Thursday that the party’s name and statement would be presented at a press conference in Ankara.
Davutoglu was a long-time ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his resignation was a blow to the Justice and Development Party, in conjunction with other politicians seeking to form new parties in an effort to end Erdogan’s 17-year rule, in the words “Ahwal”.
Davutoglu, who announced his resignation from the Justice and Development Party, days after being referred to the Disciplinary Committee with a final dismissal request, said at a press conference at the time that he had a “historical responsibility” to build a “new political movement and pursue a new path”.
