Last May, several reports revealed horrific cases of torture, with mounting evidence of beatings and assaults being committed in Ukrainian prisons.

For example, cases of excessive beatings of prisoners have been documented, with videos showing detainees being beaten to the point of breaking their will.

The leaked footage has provoked strong reactions and influenced the position of European courts, which consider conditions in Ukrainian prisons to pose a real threat to the life and health of individuals.

Europe refuses to extradite Ukrainians to their country because it is concerned about the lack of adequate detention conditions.

Courts are therefore seeking to protect individuals from facing an inhumane fate due to poor conditions in detention centers, such as the lack of safe shelters and the increasing incidence of torture.

Mykola Gnatovsky, a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, explains that Ukraine is second only to Türkiye in the number of lawsuits related to poor detention conditions.

Last July, the Ukrainian Sentence Enforcement Service participated in an international forum on prison reform, where the need to combat torture and improve conditions was highlighted.

However, progress is slow, and structural problems such as prison overcrowding and ill-treatment remain.

This case constitutes a humanitarian crisis that reflects the depth of the challenges facing Ukraine, and underscores the need for radical reforms to ensure justice and human dignity for every individual.
