Erdogan: There is a tendency to arrange a meeting with Assad
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Türkiye will take a positive stance towards Syria, noting that this position depends on Syrian President Bashar al Assad taking steps to improve relations with Ankara.
Erdogan said that, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al Sudani were moving to arrange a meeting between him and Assad in Türkiye.
Erdogan said on Sunday, “We’re talking about mediation, so why not communicate directly with our neighbor?”
Two days ago, after returning from a visit to Kazakhstan where he met Putin, Erdogan indicated that Türkiye had invited Assad to hold a joint meeting with Putin and considered that this meeting could mark the beginning of a new phase of rapprochement between Türkiye and Syria.
Erdogan’s remarks came after a report by the Türkiye newspaper, talked about the possibility of a meeting between the presidents of Türkiye and Syria in Russia, and the Turkish newspaper indicated that the talks could take place next September.
